Luke Chapter 12: Advent
Luke 12 picks up directly where chapter 11 left us yesterday, but this time Jesus’ teaching is directed toward those following Him. We get teachings on hypocrisy, fear, greed, trust, patience, and division. He is obviously preparing His followers for the difficulties to come while pointing them to the reality of God’s Kingdom.
As you read, pay attention to the way Jesus speaks into the human condition, human concerns, and God’s solution. Yes, there are worldly consequences, but the rewards are out of this world.

Reflection Questions:
- What was Jesus most concerned about regarding the Pharisees?
- What metaphor did Jesus use to warn against the Pharisees? Why?
- What is Jesus’ teaching on fear? Do you find it odd He says to fear God? What does this mean?
- Jesus is adamant about how we accept and receive God also connects to how God accepts and receives us. He also gives us an important word about the Holy Spirit. What was it? How might this help you when confronted by others about your faith?
- Why did Jesus teach like He did regarding property and greed?
- What does Jesus teach is the antithesis, opposite, and antidote for worry?
- What kind of baptism did Jesus refer to that He Himself had to undergo (see verses 49-50)?
- Jesus then goes on to teach about patience and waiting. What is His goal? What is the ultimate thing for which we are called to wait?
- Jesus gives some difficult teaching about division and opposition. He also draws a connection between two kinds of judgments (see verses 14 and 58). What do you think is His primary meaning? Who, or what, is the judge?
- Jesus makes a reference about debt. Do you think His parable is talking about money? Why or why not?
Prayer: Dear Lord, I see how you worked so hard to prepare your followers for what was to come, not just in Jerusalem at your crucifixion, but also following in the promotion of your Kingdom. Help me to be bold when I feel afraid. Help me to be generous when I feel greedy. Help me with spiritual patience so I may be ready to share my hope in faith regardless of what comes my way. I ask this in Jesus’ holy and helping name. Amen.
