Trinity // 2 Corinthians 13:14
Today’s verse comes from the very end of Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth. Paul drew upon Trinitarian language emphasizing the unique roles of God — One being in three persons as the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity helps us see that God exists in perfect relationship as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is in direct contrast to some heretical teaching of the Trinity called, modalism. The idea behind modalism is that God is just one who manifested differently based on the needs at the time. Modalism indicates that the God of the Old Testament presented in one way, then in another in the person of Jesus, and finally as the Holy Spirit after Jesus’ Resurrection. The reality is God is three persons in one, which we get a glimpse of in creation when God says, “Let us…”; at Jesus’ Baptism when the Father speaks and the Spirit descends; Jesus’ Transfiguration as the disciples get a glimpse into how Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s plan; and referenced by Jesus in the Great Commission, among others. God is with us all and at all times. May this support and comfort you today as you know you were made for a purpose, saved from your sin, and empowered to live for God in all ways and in all places.
