I AM the Light of the World

A message by Pastor Mark Jordan

I AM the Light of the World

  • John 8:12 (ESV) | Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
  • This took place during the Festival of Tabernacles
  • Lights were hung to memorialize how God led the Israelites through the Exodus journey by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of flame at night
  • Jesus was teaching that He doesn’t just illuminate the path, He is the path!

Light in Scripture

  • Light as in illumination, radiance
  • Light as in a life-force
  • Truth, goodness, God’s presence

Light from the Beginning

  • Genesis 1:1-4 (ESV) | In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.
  • This is day 1 but the things by which we associate light (sun, moon, stars) were not created until day 4.
  • God is telling us that the difference between good and evil is as clear as night and day

A Well-Lit Life

  • John 1:4-5 (ESV) | In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
  • Illuminates the world
  • Reveals good and evil
  • Gives our new, saved, life-force

Reflect God’s Light

  • Matthew 5:14a, 16 (ESV) | 14 “You are the light of the world…. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
  • Jesus shares His light with you
  • Jesus wants you to help light the world
  • Help people find their NEW life-force
