HOPE AT THE MOVIES // Big Daddy and Baptism

Big Daddy clip (2019)

SCUBA Sam’s Mission

  • Matthew 4:18-20 (NLT) | 18 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” 20 And they left their nets at once and followed him.

Get Cleaned Up and Grow Up

  • Acts 2:38-39 (NLT) | 38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

Get Dressed in Your New Christ Clothes

  • Galatians 3:26-27 (MSG) | By faith in Christ you are in direct relationship with God. Your baptism in Christ was not just washing you up for a fresh start. It also involved dressing you in an adult faith wardrobe—Christ’s life, the fulfillment of God’s original promise.

Reflection Questions

  1. How is Jesus’ mission like SCUBA Sam’s mission? How did Jesus initiate it?
  2. How have you reveled in your childish immaturity and resisted the change the Christ calls us to?
  3. What did Peter say about becoming more like Jesus? How impactful was this in Peter’s life?
  4. What imagery did we get from the “Big Daddy” movie clip that represented new life in Christ?
  5. What is the point of Baptism? What next?
