Hope at the Movies 4 // “Billy Madison”

A message by Pastor Mark Jordan for Back-to-School Sunday

This Week’s Clip is from Billy Madison. Starring Adam Sandler and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras (Universal Studios, 1995).

Bible Lesson (Overview of Jonah, focusing on Jonah 3:1-13; click here to read Jonah online in its entirety.

  • Jonah 3:1-3 (NIV) | 1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh.
  • God doesn’t abandon Jonah but gives him a second chance.
    • God’s Persistence: The phrase “a second time” is key. God didn’t replace Jonah;
He pursued him, showing grace despite disobedience.
    • Jonah’s Response: Jonah obeyed and went to Nineveh. His second chance required action, not just relief from the fish.

Where do you need another chance? God didn’t give up on Jonah, and He won’t give up on you!

Try Jonah’s R.A.F.T.:

  • Repent: Turn back to God
  • Act in Obedience
  • Faith over Fear
  • Trust God’s Grace

Let us Pray: Lord, thank You for being a God of second chances! Forgive me when I let my fear get in the way of faith. Help me, like Jonah, to hear Your voice and obey. Amen!

Reflection Questions

  1. In Jonah 3:1-3, God gives Jonah a second chance to obey His call after he ran away. Why do you think God chose to pursue Jonah again instead of picking someone else? How does this show us something about God’s character?
  2. In the clip, we saw that Billy’s father gives him a chance to prove himself by going back to school, even though Billy had been irresponsible. How does this remind you of God’s grace in your own life? Can you share a time when you felt God gave you a second chance?
  3. Jonah had to act obediently on his second chance. What’s one area in your life where you feel God might be offering you a fresh start? What is one step you can take to respond?
  4. Jonah initially ran from God’s call because going to Nineveh was an intimidating mission. What might keep us from embracing the second chances God offers us today (e.g., fear, pride, or doubt)? How can we overcome those barriers?
  5. Jonah’s second chance led to Nineveh’s repentance, showing God’s mercy extended beyond Jonah to others. How might accepting God’s second chance in your life impact those around you? What does this reveal about God’s purposes?
