Scary Bible 1 // Exchanging the Truth for a Lie

Romans 1:18-25 (NIV) | 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Knowing God (vs.18-20)

• Knowing about God without knowing God personally
• God is revealed in nature and His Word (JESUS!)
• 1 Corinthians 13:12, “…I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

Foolishness (vs.21-23)

• The fool sets his own thoughts, ideas, and opinions as the standard as opposed to the laws of nature and nature’s God.
• The result is idolatry: instead of acknowledging a mistake, the fools says we just haven’t tried hard enough.
• Proverbs 14:7, “Stay away from a fool, for you will not find knowledge on their lips.”

Desire (vs.24-25)

• Desire: epithumia, meaning passionate desire for forbidden pleasure
• Abandoning: meaning God allows us to make our own choices, even bad ones [no enabling]
• Romans 13:14, “Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Hope and Help

• Acknowledge the truth that sets you free (John 8:32)
• Call on Jesus for Salvation (Romans 10:13)
• Make your thoughts obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5)
