Large and In Charge // 2 Samuel 7:22

The Lord God is GREAT! God is large and in charge. This is the essence of today’s verse from 2 Samuel. The context is King David felt a burden to build God a house since he himself lived in a nice home. God told David through the Prophet Nathan that he essentially did enough and the temple would be a project for King David’s son, Solomon. David initiated the process of collecting the necessary materials for the temple, but Solomon oversaw its construction. The temple was large, great, and grand. It was majestic and mysterious. People from all over went to worship, give, and gather. As awesome as it was, that ultimately was not the house God desired most. That might sound odd, but the home God truly wants today is your heart. Ephesians 3:17 encourages us to remember that Jesus Christ lives in our hearts to root and establish us in love. Our creating, saving, and sustaining God could have any home in the cosmos, but chooses the hearts of His beloved children. The God who is large and in charge longs to reside in your finite and fragile heart. Imagine that! Of all the things we give the place of honor in our heart, is there room for our great and sovereign God? As we prepare to go to worship, give, and gather on this Lord’s Day, let’s not just see the buildings and facilities as God’s house; rather, know with confidence that He lives in you and me. May that root you and establish your life in love.
