James 1:2-3
Today’s verse is one I don’t particularly like; not because I disagree with what James wrote, I just wish it wasn’t true. I would much prefer my faith life get developed in ways other than hardship and challenge. As I look back over my life, I see that my darkest moments helped shape me into who I am today. They deepened my faith, developed my character, and determined my testimony. And I must say that process is ongoing!
Famed football coach Lou Holtz once wrote, “Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity.” It seems to me that James and Coach Holtz agree the challenges we face bring our faith-life out in the open, revealing where we are and where we need to grow. I am not a finished product. Neither are you. Challenges are golden if we allow them to accomplish God’s intended work of making us more like Jesus.
You are never a lost cause, even when you feel all is lost. Look to the opportunities for growth and jump into that process. Consider it a sheer gift, because if given the opportunity, God uses them to make you more like Jesus.
